With the kids almost out of school and more relaxed schedules (or—yay—vacation!) in our sights, we are about to hit summer—a season when we let a lot of things slide. Ice cream becomes a legitimate dinner option; noon a reasonable waking hour.
One thing, however, we can’t forget during this laziest of seasons is our feet: they are actually at their most exposed and vulnerable over the next few months.
Here are 4 things you can do to keep your feet feeling great over the summer:
- Wear sunscreen: though open shoes are something of a year-round option in Houston, they are a daily reality over the summer. The delicate skin on the tops of our feet are extremely vulnerable to burns and skin cancer so lather on the lotion to stay safe in the sun.
- Don’t go barefoot: Yes, it may be tempting to stroll down the street sans shoes in the 100-plus-degree weather, but it’s a bad idea. Aside from stepping on debris, you may pick up highly-contagious bacteria that can lead to foot-and-toenail fungi. Slip a shoe on, even (especially!) poolside.
- Banish swelling: If you plan on hitting the road or the skies for an extended travel time, make sure to move your feet a lot while you’re on the go. Sitting in a car or plane for an extended period of time can leave your feet bloated and swollen—to avoid this problem, wiggle your toes, flex your ankles and, if possible, get up and walk around (obviously, pull of the road first if you’re driving) to maintain adequate blood flow to the feet.
- Choose the right shoes: Don’t fall victim to flip-flop temptation. Even though it’s hot out, your feet still need support. Reserve flimsy plastic footwear for showers and poolside and stick with the same supportive footwear I hope you wear year round.
