Depending on how it is used, technology can also be a blessing or a curse. If you let it, it can take over your life! There have been recent advances in healthcare technology that has the potential to save lives and limbs.
One such technological advance is, for lack of a better term, a smart bathmat. This bathmat is the product of Health Tech startup Podimetrics whose mission statement is "freeing the world of diabetic foot ulcers." Their technology allows for a 20 second scan of the feet to check for any changes in pressure or structure. 20 seconds....less than the time it takes you to brush your teeth!
The bathmat checks for pressure, temperature, and other factors that can serve as early warning for a diabetic foot ulcer to form. Data is uploaded and analyzed automatically. If an increased risk for a diabetic foot ulcer is detected, the patient and doctor are both notified. This will serve as yet another tool in the war against amputations caused by foot complications related to diabetes. I will certainly be following this and other companies closely!
If you have diabetes and are noticing changes in your foot or the start of a dibetic foot ulcer, even if you think it may be simply a callus, get it checked immediately! Contact Houston podiatrist Dr. Andrew Schneider for an immediate appointment.
