All you hear about these days is superfoods…between Farro, Acai Berry and the ever popular (but kinda freaky) Freekeh, it seems like there’s a new miracle food fad each week.
While diabetics can certainly benefit from superfoods that benefit the general population, the American Diabetes Association has generated its own list of diabetes-specific superfoods (most available in any grocery store!), designed to help you manage blood sugar and improve your over-all health.

- Aspargus—high on taste, low in carbs and calories; studies even suggest it can keep blood sugar in control and stimulate insulin production!
- Beans—1 cup of legumes daily results in better blood sugar control and lower blood pressure
- Baby carrots—these make for a perfect snack! Low on starch, five baby carrots are considered a free food that don’t even need to be recorded on your meal plan.
- Watermelon—contains lycopene, which can protect against cell damage.
- Nuts—can improve blood sugar control in Type 2 diabetes, but watch portion control, as they’re also high in calories.
- Oatmeal—its soluble fiber content can help delay the rise of blood sugar
- Raspberries—their ellagic acid helps fight insulin resistance while lowering blood sugar and staving off inflammation.
- Red Grapefruit—another great source of soluble fiber. Can interact with some meds, so check with your doctor about counter-indications for your drug-regimen.
- Red onions—much higher in antioxidants than any other variety of onion.
- Red peppers—serving size is one whole cup, giving you lots of food for very little starch and calorie exchange.
