An ingrown toenail is one of the most common conditions we see in our Houston podiatry practice. One of our previous videos details the causes of an ingrown toenail. Some people fall into the trap of having to continue to come in to have an ingrown toenail cared for time and time again. This should not be the case.

The first time we see someone with an ingrown toenail, it is usually painful and infected. The problem is that they wait to come back until the toenail is again ingrown and infected. I typically like to see my patients back three months after caring for an infected ingrown toenail. This is long enough to see how the nail is returning, but not too long for it to become infected once again.

The procedure to permanently treat an ingrown toenail involves removing the extreme border of the toenail that is ingrowing. Medicine is then placed at the base of the nail and cauterizes the cells that grown the border of that nail. This is what prevents it from returning. It is a quick and simple procedure done in the office.

So, yes, you can prevent your ingrown toenail from returning!!!
