Houston Ankle Surgeon Dr. David Blumfield Discusses Total Ankle Replacement on Great Day Houston with Debra Duncan

Chronic ankle pain occurs for a few reasons. The first is arthritis. Ankle arthritis is the breakdown of the joint. It can be due to a system inflammatory arthritic condition, such as rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis, or just because of the progressive mechanical breakdown of the ankle joint. Often this breakdown and destruction of the ankle joint is caused by previous injury or trauma, such as fractures, surgery, or even chronic ankle sprains.
The pain from ankle arthritis is due to the damage of the cartilage within the joint. It leads to inflammation and a decreased motion of the ankle joint. This motion essentially grinds the joint, causing further destruction and increased pain. There are appropriate ankle surgeries, such as ankle arthroscopy, that help to clean up a joint when minor breakdown is noted. More severe cases call for more advanced procedures.
In the past, the best outcome for severe cases of ankle arthritis was an ankle fusion. In fact, ankle fusions are still appropriate in many cases with excellent results. The surgery fuses the ankle joint and eliminates pain by eliminating the painful motion of the joint. Another option is a Total Ankle Replacement which replaces the ankle joint to restore pain-free motion. Houston Ankle Surgeon and Podiatrist Dr. David Blumfield was invited to appear on Great Day Houston with Debra Duncan to discuss this revolutionary surgery.
