Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last few days, I’m sure you’ve heard at least something about Miley Cyrus’ provocative performance at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).
There are so many aspects of the performance that have confused, shocked and angered the public: why were there giant dancing teddy bears on stage? Why was Miley’s tongue out the whole time? Did she need to be half-naked? Why was she twerking (and if, like me, you had no previous idea what twerking was, here’s a quick definition)?
Since those wild moments on stage, this 20 year old young woman has been accused of everything from purveying child pornography to hijacking African-American culture. I’m not going to even touch on any of those subjects…I just want to focus on the positive.
There were probably very few people looking at Miley’s feet during her performance, but as a Houston podiatrist, I instantly noticed that Miley had on sneakers for her dancing. Say what you want about the moral issues with her time on stage, at least Miley had the sense to protect her feet with shoes that were appropriate for the level of physical exertion she was displaying. Unlike Lady Gaga, who danced like crazy in her high-heeled boots, putting her in danger of spraining an ankle or breaking a bone, Miley’s feet were supported and protected in her athletic footwear.
So to all the newly-minted Miley Cyrus haters out there, I say: celebrate the fact that she is at least a positive role model for women’s foot health. And if you’ve been less cautious with your feet and are experiencing foot pain, come see me at Tanglewood Foot Specialists to relieve your discomfort.
