Answer: Game Show Host Who Tore His Achilles Tendon While Chasing A Burglar
And the question: Who is Alex Trebek?
Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek was in San Francisco to attend a National Geographic World Championship. He saw a woman breaking into his hotel room and he was able to chase her down. Unfortunately, in the chase, he tore his Achilles tendon and is scheduled to undergo surgery on Friday.
The Achilles tendon is one of the strongest tendons in the body and is under great tension. When a complete rupture occurs, it feels like you get shot in the back of the leg. It is a serious injury that must be treated immediately.
If the tendon is in good position, a rupture may be treated with a non-weightbearing cast. The foot is pointed in a downward position when casted to allow the tendon ends to meet and heal. Because of the tension in the tendon, the end coming down the leg often reflects up, much like snapping an elastic band. In this case, the tendon needs to be repaired surgically. This is the procedure that Alex Trebek will undergo.
Even after surgery, immobilization and non-weight bearing will be necessary. That will be followed by physical therapy to regain strength, function, and range of motion. It's a long ordeal, and Trebek will need a stool on Jeopardy! for a while, but he'll be on the road to recovery shortly.
