Every so often, I hear a story so devastating that it just makes me glad there are great podiatric surgeons in cities around the world. Today is one of those days.
In the middle of a beautiful day in New York City, as tourists and residents alike were sitting by a fountain near Rockefeller Center, a taxi cab struck a bicyclist and jumped the curb into the popular tourist area. As the cab rode into human traffic, it rode over and severed a young woman’s foot.
On this horrific day, the people of New York reacted admirably; one man tied a tourniquet on the woman, another found her foot and put it on ice so that it could be re-attached with surgery. Even Dr. Oz, whose show had been filming across the street from the scene, stopped everything and ran out to help the victim until paramedics arrived.
Today, as a Houston podiatrist, I want to extend my most sincere wishes for a full recovery to this brave young woman whose visit to our country from England was so horribly interrupted. I sincerely hope that the fast actions of the people who surrounded her at the time of the incident will allow her surgeons to successfully reattach her foot and allow her to return to her former life.
