Is everyone you know talking about how boring yesterday’s Super Bowl was? Or are you all secretly on YouTube right now, checking out the great commercials you may have missed (a Seinfeld and Full House reunion? You got it, dude!)
Those conversations are to be expected the morning after the big game, but there’s another conversation I need to have with you as your Houston podiatrist. We all know that the Super Bowl is not the night to start a diet, but did you know that drinking too much beer or soda last night may have put you at risk of developing gout?
If you don’t already know, gout is a condition characterized by intense foot pain; it is caused by a buildup of uric acid in the smaller bones of the feet. So if you drank a few too many beers as you watched the Denver Broncos get trounced, or slugged back a ton of Coke as you watched the soda giant’s touching “America the Beautiful” commercial, you might be facing a gout flare up in the next day or so (the alcohol in beer fights uric acid for filtration in your kidneys, and the soda can stimulate uric acid production. If you combined the two, then you really need to watch out!)
How do you know if you’re having a flare up? If you’re experiencing gout, your feet will be in extreme pain, sensitive even to the touch of your bed sheets, and your big toe joint will become red and swollen.
Are you already experiencing these symptoms or nervous that you overdid it yesterday and this pain might be in your future? Don’t worry, I can help. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Andrew Schneider so I can assess the situation and give you relief as soon as possible.
