The One Surprising Fashion Week Trend I’m Digging

Thanks to the runway gods, you can now rock your socks and sandals with prideNew York fashion week has come to a close. Amid all the towering platforms and lace up boots which made me, as a Houston podiatrist, inwardly cringe, there was one trend I was pleased to see pop up on the runways: wearing socks with your sandals.

Sandals are a year-round favorite here in Houston, but not only do they lack arch support, they also leave toes and feet open to infection; susceptible to rubbing and the inevitable subsequent blisters; and, thanks to sweaty conditions, more likely to develop a foot fungus such as athlete’s foot.

Wearing socks with your sandals could help combat a lot of those issues by giving your feet a protective, moisture-wicking barrier, but for years, the combo was considered to be one of the top fashion sins in existence.

And now? Hallelujah! That’s no longer the case. Designers like Teva sent the look down the runway back in July, and athletic stars like Floyd Merriweather are helping spread the trend’s popularity to the masses.

It’s still not a ‘thing’ in ladies fashion, but, given the practicality and comfort of the notion, one can only hope that the women will be pulling out their sock drawer in the near future.

Of course, in my book, comfortable feet are always in fashion. I’m just glad the rest of the world is catching up to my fashion-forward sensibilities.
