Thoughts on Completing My First Half Marathon

I did it!

In 2013 I set a goal for myself to complete a runDisney half marathon by the end of the year. Two injuries set me back and I didn't achieve the goal. I decided to push the goal to this year. This time I chose a different approach...to treat myself like I would treat my patients.

Last year's injuries were simply because I was doing too much too soon. In January I started to walk regularly and lost weight. Only then did I progress to running, following a strict training plan to bring me to 5K, 10K, and ultimately the half marathon.

This past Sunday, November 16, I completed my goal by running Disney's Avengers Superheroes Half Marathon at Disneyland in California. I ran, I walked, and I even limped a little bit...but I finished and that was the goal. Now I have a base time should I decide on doing another, which I probably will.

The experience was special. The course was flat, but we were running into a headwind for much of the race. When we hit a trail, it became a veritable sand storm! But running through Disneyland with my wife Mirit and having her and my kids cheering me on at the finish brought tears to my eyes.

To wrap up a great weekend, Mirit and I, along with our good friend Dr. Misty McNeill from Prairie Path Foot & Ankle in Chicago, wore our medals proudly in the theme parks that day. Now I'm sore, in a good way though, and it was all worth it because...

I did it!
