With the Houston marathon coming up this weekend, I wanted to give those of you finishing your last days of training a few tips for running in colder weather, in case our city plays a trick on us and the temperature drops once again.
With the marathon beginning at 7:00 a.m. and runners lining up earlier, there’s a decent chance that some roads may still be icy. If the temperature drops on Saturday night, you may want to select shoes with good grips or even cleat-like bottoms for the morning of the big race.
Keep knees and ankles safe
Anyone who’s running 26.2 miles is at risk for overuse injuries, and cold weather can make you even more vulnerable to this kind of problem. If you’re racing Sunday morning at it’s really cold out, consider layering with tights or over-the-knee socks. Warm joints and limbs are safe joints and limbs.
Help your feet stay toasty
Most of us in Houston don’t own winter running shoes, which come with more insulation or water-resistant exteriors. If it’s cold outside, however, and you’re going to be running outside for several hours, your feet and toes could get cold and cause you discomfort. If you don’t have winter runners, you could try putting duct tape on the toes of your regular shoes to add an extra layer of warmth protection.
Bring on the padding
When it’s cold out, your soles are less flexible, which can make long-distance running more difficult. If you wear shoes with more padding, rigid feet will feel less pain.
Have fun and stay safe
