Pop Star Rihanna was entertaining friends on a yacht when she jumped behind the bar to take over some bartending duties. While pouring drinks for her guests, she dropped a bottle of liquor on her foot and broke her toe. Her assistant tweeted a photo of her foot all bandaged and taped together...complete with swelling and bruising.
Rihanna seemed in good spirits, too. "Bartending lastnight, dropped a bottle, broke it, my foot is still bleeding!!!" she tweeted Monday.
What do you do when out in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by your friends, and you suddenly break your toe. For one, you should get off your feet. Toes swell quickly and stay swollen for a long time. Because of gravity and small vessels in the foot, it takes a good long time for the fluid to leave the toe. Second, as you see Rihanna did well, you should buddy splint the injured toe to the toe next to it. This will help to provide stability to the injured toe. It is also helpful to use ice to help manage inflammation.
It is important to get the injured toe evaluated and have an x-ray taken. Wait!! Isn't it true that there is nothing you can do for a broken foot? That's not the case at all. It is important to see that the broken toe is in good position. If not, it can heal improperly and cause continuous pain and problems wearing shoes. Surgery is rarely necessary, but there are time that manipulation to realign the bone is helpful.
While you can use OTC anti-inflammtory medication, such as Advil or Aleve, to hel with the pain, I suspect Rihanna just continued to enjoy the drinks she was busy pouring while she hurt her foot. That would probably kill the pain too. If you have dropped a bottle on your foot, or injured your toe in any other way, contact Houston podiatrist Dr. Andrew Schneider to have it examined and treated.
