Houston podiatrist treating dry cracked feetIn Houston, with our hot and humid weather, you would think we wouldn't need to talk about dry skin, but we see dry, cracked feet for a couple of reasons.

  1. Because it is so hot in Houston in the summertime, everyone is wearing sandals. The dust from the ground affects the foot and causes it to dry.
  2. Lately, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are home a lot and not wearing shoes. Going barefoot is another reason why our feet can dry and crack.

What do we do for dry, cracked feet?

Cracks are uncomfortable, they can bleed, and they can become infected. So if you're diabetic, it is important to get on top of this condition and get them healed. Fortunately, it is pretty simple to get them healed.

Even if you are not diabetic, they are uncomfortable, so it is important to use a good moisturizing cream. There are good over the counter creams available, I recommend Cetaphil or Eucerin cream. Sometimes we need to use a stronger prescription strength cream. I recommend creams with an inactive form of uric acid, called urea, which we have in the office ready to dispense.

We also carry Adessa Gel Socks that have a layer of medicated gel that contains moisturizing oils. The socks will help to drive the cream into the skin when worn overnight, but the gel alone will also be moisturizing. Both men and women love wearing these socks and they do a great job healing painful cracks.

If you're experiencing dry, cracked feet and you've tried what should have worked (but it hasn't), give us a call for an immediate appointment.
