You wake up. You give yourself a stretch. You step out of bed in the morning and BAM something hits you in your heel, in the back of your heel, in your Achilles tendon, in the ball of your foot. It doesn't matter where it is, but there's nothing more jarring than waking up to foot pain the minute you put your foot on the ground.

Hi, I'm Houston podiatrist, Dr. Andrew Schneider. And if that sounds familiar to you, it's something that I hear every day in my office time and time and time again, whether it be someone having heel pain on the bottom of their heel or pain in their Achilles tendon or pain in the ball of their foot. A common feature of all of these sorts of pains is the pain that you feel after you first step out of bed in the morning. And then also after periods of inactivity, if you're in a car for a while and you step out of the car, you'll have pain then. If you're sitting at your desk for a while and stand up, you'll have pain then.

Well, why does that happen? And it has to do with inflammation. When your body's at rest in bed, in the car, at your desk, it's going to take the opportunity to repair itself and when you have soft tissue, it's going to repair itself by pulling itself together. And then when you first step out of bed in the morning, it takes all that repair work and pulls it apart. And that's what causes that searing pain first thing in the morning.

So first of all, you're not alone. It is a very common condition, a very common concern and a very common complaint. And it's something that I hear at my office literally every day. And there are simple ways to get past it, but you have to take the first step. And the first step is realizing that it's not going to go away on its own. Come on into the office. And let me take a look.

Give us a call at the office for an immediate appointment, and just tell us that you have pain when you first step out of bed in the morning. And we'll be sure to get you right in.
